Itala Tipo 55 History

The Tipo 55 revived Itala's pre-war experimentation with alternative valve technologies, using a 4,426 cc engine fitted with the 'Avalve' system — a rotary valve design intended to improve gas flow and reduce mechanical complexity compared with conventional poppet valves.

The Avalve concept was technically ambitious and reflected the restless engineering culture that had made Itala famous in the racing years. In commercial practice, however, the rotary valve proved difficult to manufacture reliably and expensive to maintain, and the Tipo 55 did not sell in meaningful numbers.

Contemporary references place the Tipo 55's introduction around 1922 and give it only a brief production life in the early 1920s (sources vary on the exact span, and no reliable closing year is recorded).
