The 2002 model year

Overview

After the 1998–2001 hiatus, Ford revived Thunderbird for 2002 as a rear-drive two-seat convertible in Deluxe and Premium series. Every car used a 252-hp 3.9-liter 32-valve DOHC V8 and five-speed automatic overdrive; the chrome-trimmed porthole hardtop was removable equipment rather than a fixed-roof body.

What changed

  • Ford restored the two-seat roadster format and offered Deluxe and Premium equipment series.
  • An optional removable hardtop echoed the 1957 porthole design without creating a separate fixed-roof model.

Worth knowing

Notable

  • Ford's brochure lists 252 hp and 261 lb-ft; the 280-hp revision belongs to 2003–2005.

Reliability & ownership notes

  • Confirm Deluxe versus Premium equipment and whether the removable-top hardware and storage cart remain with the car.
  • Use Ford's exact 2002 maintenance guide for the sole 3.9-liter V8 rather than later 280-hp specifications.
