History
Launched in January 1983 as the replacement for the Fiat 127, the Uno was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and won the European Car of the Year award for 1984, narrowly ahead of the Peugeot 205. Its tall, space-efficient body recalled Giugiaro's earlier Lancia Megagamma concept, maximising interior volume relative to exterior size.
The Uno was produced across a single generation (with a mid-cycle facelift in 1989) as three- and five-door hatchbacks, with a range of petrol and diesel engines. A turbocharged Uno Turbo i.e. added genuine performance credentials to the range.
With over 8,800,000 units built in Europe through 1995 — and continuing in Brazil until 2014 — the Uno is ranked among the eight most-produced automobile platforms in history, a remarkable achievement for a car sold mainly in smaller markets.
