Fiat Punto History
History
Introduced in late 1993 as the direct replacement for the Fiat Uno, the Punto won the European Car of the Year award for 1995, beating the Volkswagen Polo. The first generation (1993–1999) sold 3.43 million units and was notable for its clean design and improved quality over its predecessors.
A second generation followed in 1999, updated styling and technology for Fiat's centenary year, selling approximately 2.96 million units through 2010. The third generation — marketed first as the Grande Punto (2005), then the Punto Evo (2009), then simply Punto — continued through 2018 without a true successor, closing the book on a nameplate that sold nearly nine million cars over its lifetime.
The Punto was never officially sold new in the United States, where Fiat had withdrawn from the market in the early 1980s and had not yet returned. It remained a mainstream European family hatchback and an important volume model for Fiat through its long run.
