Fiat Panda History
History
Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign and introduced in 1980, the Fiat Panda was conceived as a simple, affordable, functional small car for Europe. Its boxy, upright shape, flat glass, and hammock-style seats were purposeful rather than stylish — a utilitarian philosophy that proved remarkably durable. The first generation ran from 1980 to 2003, selling approximately 4.5 million units, with a four-wheel-drive variant added in 1983.
The second generation (2003), styled by Giuliano Biasio of Bertone, modernised the formula and won the European Car of the Year award for 2004 — validating the Panda concept for a new generation. A third generation followed in 2011 and has remained in production in Italy.
Across more than four decades the Panda has sold over 7.8 million units globally, cementing its status as one of Europe's most enduring and recognisable small cars.
