Bristol 407 History

The 407 (1961–1963) is the hinge point of Bristol's history. The cost and complexity of developing the BMW-derived six further had grown prohibitive, and Bristol's solution was decisive: a 5.1-litre (313 cubic inch) Chrysler V8 sourced from Canada, paired with a Chrysler TorqueFlite three-speed automatic transmission. The character of the car changed completely — quieter, with far more low-down torque, and effortless on long-distance runs in a way the revvy six never was.

Only 88 Type 407s were built in the two years of production, but the formula was established. Four closely related numbered successors — the 408 (1963–1965, 83 built), 409 (1965–1967, 74 built), and 410 (1968–1969, 82 built) — followed with incremental improvements to styling and suspension before the 411 brought the first significant engine upgrade.
