History

The RLX succeeded the RL as Acura's range-topping sedan for the 2014 model year, riding on a new platform shared with the Honda Legend. Its base powertrain was a 3.5-liter V6 with front-wheel drive; a Sport Hybrid SH-AWD variant added two front-axle electric motors and one at the rear for all-wheel torque vectoring without a mechanical rear driveshaft — a novel engineering approach at the time. Despite competitive technology, the RLX continued the RL's pattern of modest sales against well-established German and Japanese competitors. Acura discontinued the RLX after the 2020 model year without a direct replacement, effectively exiting the full-size luxury sedan segment.
