Compliance and ratings answer different questions

The speeds, barriers, dummies and scoring can differ, so passing a standard is not the same as earning a top consumer rating.

Protocols change

Programs add crash modes, seating positions, injury measures and active-safety evaluations as technology and evidence develop.

Do not compare stars or labels across distant eras without checking the protocol used in each year.

NCAP began as a consumer test above the minimum

NHTSA says it launched the world's first New Car Assessment Program with frontal barrier tests in 1978 and added light trucks in 1983. The program was designed to give buyers comparative information beyond the pass-or-fail question asked by a minimum federal standard.

Later NCAP versions added side impact, rollover resistance, crash-avoidance information, and revised dummies and injury measures. A five-star label therefore needs its test year and protocol; the graphic alone is not a timeless safety unit.

A rating applies to the tested configuration

NHTSA publishes procedures and reports for frontal, side, rollover, and crash-avoidance assessments. The database record identifies the rated vehicle, and apparent twins may not share a result when structure, body, restraint equipment, or weight differs.

Use crash ratings alongside recall status and exact model-year history. A strong historical score does not prove that a used car has unrepaired recalls, undamaged structure, correct replacement airbags, or serviceable belts.

Use ratings for the exact vehicle

Body style, model year, drivetrain and weight class can affect applicability. Structural changes during a generation may also matter.

Start with the official rating record and recall database, then use the model history to understand when the tested configuration changed.
