DOE identifies the cheaper mass-produced Model T, the 1912 electric starter, expanding roads, inexpensive gasoline, and limited rural electricity as important reasons gasoline gained the advantage. Electric road vehicles then contracted sharply rather than following a steady century-long growth curve.

The modern revival rests on a different technical stack

Modern battery-electric cars pair rechargeable traction batteries with power electronics, thermal management, electric motors, software, and external charging. Comparing them with a 1900 city car requires more than noting that both use electricity.

For an exact model, record usable rather than merely nominal battery capacity when available, the official test cycle, connector and maximum charge rates, thermal strategy, drivetrain layout, warranty boundaries, and model-year software or hardware changes.

Modern enabling technology changed the equation

Power electronics, lithium-ion cells, thermal management and software improved range, performance and durability.

Policy and charging investment also mattered, but a regulation or incentive alone does not explain product success.
