Electric cars came early
Battery-electric vehicles competed with steam and gasoline cars around the beginning of the twentieth century. Limited range, charging access, battery performance and mass production helped gasoline vehicles dominate much of the century.
Modern electric adoption followed advances in power electronics and lithium-ion batteries, plus charging investment and regulation. A launch announcement, first delivery and mass-market availability remain different milestones.
Hybrids connected two systems
The history of hybrid cars includes early experiments but the modern market was established by electronically controlled production hybrids that recovered braking energy and optimized engine operation. Conventional, plug-in and range-extended hybrids should be compared separately.
Their real fuel and emissions results depend on duty cycle, charging and the electricity or fuel source—not the badge alone.
Emissions rules reshaped engines
The history of automotive emissions controls includes crankcase ventilation, catalytic converters, unleaded fuel, oxygen sensors, electronic fuel control, onboard diagnostics and increasingly stringent pollutant standards.
Greenhouse-gas and fuel-economy programs address different legal authorities from traditional pollutant standards. A change to one program does not automatically repeal the others.
