A new platform with familiar styling can be a redesign, while extensively changed lamps, fascias, interior, and software can remain a facelift when the production architecture continues. Publish the reasons for the classification so readers can evaluate it.
Ownership consequences reveal the useful boundary
Parts catalogs, collision-repair procedures, diagnostic systems, wheel alignment, glass and sensor calibration, emissions certification, and maintenance literature often change at the engineering boundary. Cosmetic interchangeability does not prove mechanical or electronic compatibility.
Link each redesign or facelift milestone to exact-year pages and keep early/late build restrictions visible. Record the market and body style too, because a manufacturer can replace one variant while another continues. That makes the history useful for identification and service instead of merely labeling styling eras.
Classify the change at more than one level
A model can receive a new front structure, dashboard electronics, or powertrain family while retaining its central body program. Record those subsystem breaks even when the overall historical label remains facelift. Owners need the component boundary, not only the generation nickname.
