The 1959 model year
Overview
For 1959 the four-seat Thunderbird continued as a Hardtop coupe or Convertible. Ford's factory lineup retained the 300-hp 352 V8 with conventional manual, overdrive, or Cruise-O-Matic and added a Thunderbird-only 350-hp 430 V8 paired exclusively with Cruise-O-Matic.

Year over year
What changed
- The optional 350-hp 430 V8 expanded the Thunderbird engine range.
- Ford restricted the 430 V8 to Cruise-O-Matic while retaining all three transmissions with the 352 V8.
Worth knowing
Notable
- The 430 V8 is preserved as a separate configuration because Ford identified it as a Thunderbird-only engine application in the factory powertrain lineup.
Living with it
Reliability & ownership notes
- Decode and physically verify the engine and transmission before ordering parts: the 430 was automatic-only, while the 352 supported three transmissions.
- Do not substitute the separate 332 Ford passenger-car engine into the Thunderbird roster; the factory lineup identifies it outside the Thunderbird application.
