The turbo era: nearly the whole range moved to turbocharged engines. For 2014 the coupe and convertible split off as the separate 4 Series, leaving the 3 Series as sedan, Touring (F31), and Gran Turismo (F34). US F30s ran model years 2012–2018, with the G20 arriving for 2019.

The 2016 model year

Overview

BMW's 2016 U.S. 3 Series combined refreshed F30 sedans and F31 Sports Wagons with the F34 Gran Turismo and F80 M3. The B58-powered 340i replaced the regular 335i sedan, but the Gran Turismo retained its 335i name. The 330e plug-in hybrid and spring-2016 M3 Competition Package added distinct powertrain choices.

  • The 340i replaced the regular 335i sedan and introduced the B58; the 335i xDrive Gran Turismo remained a different application.
  • The 330e plug-in hybrid joined the U.S. lineup for model year 2016.
  • The M3 Competition Package arrived in spring 2016 with 444 hp, retaining six-speed manual or seven-speed M-DCT choices.
